Made in Britain: Commitment to Excellence

Made in Britain is a not-for-profit organisation officially launched in 2013 to unite, support, and promote British manufacturing.

The organisation collaborates with other UK trade bodies, relevant UK government departments, and media channels to promote high-quality employment, responsible business, and sustainable economic growth.

Made in Britain is more than just a label for UK manufacturers, it represents their commitment to quality, reliability, and excellence which symbolises British craftsmanship.

Sustainability is a key aspect of the Made in Britain ethos. By choosing products bearing this prestigious mark, consumers not only contribute to an ecosystem that prioritises environmental responsibility and sustainable manufacturing processes, but also ensure that British-made products maintain a competitive edge in the global market. This alignment with sustainable values is something to be proud of and gives consumers confidence in their contribution to a greener world.

Made in Britain: Unlocking Benefits

By joining the Made in Britain community, members not only gain access to a network that supports collective growth through protected marks, but also become part of a community that values and promotes the authenticity and trustworthiness of their products.

To apply for membership, manufacturers need to meet stringent criteria, for example:

  • You must be a British-registered business.
  • Your product must be designed, manufactured, produced, or created in Great Britain.
  • 80% of your value chain needs to be within Great Britain (not including raw materials)

Once accepted, members are licensed to use the official, protected trademarks for marketing collateral, product labels and packaging in accordance with the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 which prohibits false or misleading statements about the origin of goods and services, including the place of manufacture or production.

Membership also unlocks other benefits including:

  • Regular webinars and workshops on exporting, to support businesses with international trade
  • Green Growth Programme assessments that help members become more sustainable and help them work towards achieving net zero
  • Huge online product directory enabling businesses to promote their company and products
  • Press and PR coverage of the mark and the Made in Britain organisation, in addition to boosting the exposure of members in trade press titles and mainstream media.

Lancashire-based manufacturer Pyroglass is a textile engineering company with a wealth of experience in designing, producing and marketing specialist high-temperature sealing and insulating materials. The management team and staff are passionate about the high quality of their products, which are exported globally.

Managing Director Sara Pullen said "We are a family-owned independent business proud of our long-standing reputation as a British manufacturer. Being a member of Made in Britain and displaying the mark is evidence that we manufacture to the highest standards."

Conclusion

Imported products can pose quality concerns to consumers in respect of inconsistencies in product and safety, largely due to variations in manufacturing standards and regulations across different countries.

In contrast, when consumers choose products with a Made in Britain label, they can expect high quality, reliability and sustainability.  And by upholding the values represented by this mark, UK manufacturers will be setting and maintaining standards.
